New Music // Jamie XX – Girl

22 Apr

Jamie XX is back with another solo track, outside of his regular efforts with The XX, and it’s arguably his finest one yet. An off kilter bassline provides the slinky foundation for this languid groove, while Jamie’s signature deep kicks and sharp claps echo in the cathedral space as ethereal vocals cascade around you in the darkness like a sirens song, calling out from the other side. Girl is an absolutely sublime beauty, proving yet again that Jamie XX is one of the best producers working today.

New Music Video // The XX – Chained

15 Oct

Coexist, the excellent second album from The XX, has been in our playlists long enough now that many of its treasures have been mined by our ravenous ears. It’s a slow burner for sure, not as immediate as their debut, but it’s also more sophisticated in a lot of ways.

And now The XX have released the first visual to go along with Chained, one of my personal faves from Coexist. A hypnotically beautiful video born of Romy Madley-Croft’s imagination, it’s a perfect companion to their dark and mercurial sound.

New Music // Jamie XX – Far Nearer

6 Jun

Jamie XX is the stage name for Jamie Smith who, along with Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim, make up the London-based band The XX. If you’re not yet familiar with them yet do yourself the favour, you won’t be dissapointed.

On the side Jamie has been releasing a prolific string of remixes, each track filtered through his own unique brand of Dubstep.

Working with artists like Florence + The Machine, Glasser, and most notably the late Gil Scott-Heron, he’s making distinct ripples in the musical ether, proving he’s a genuine talent and not just the beatmaster at the back of the stage during XX shows.

And now, just in time for summer, Jamie’s kettle drum infused jam that’s been floating around the internet for a while has received a proper iTunes release. While his musical style as part of The XX is dark, brooding, melancholic, and beautiful this track shows that he can do sunny days just as well as any chillwave artist.
