New Music // Mazzy Star – California

23 Jul

Its been 17 long years since Mazzy Star last released a proper album. When you think of all that’s happened since then, how different the world is now, it makes you wonder what a band would sound like after such a long time away. Not only has music changed, but politics, religion, human rights, the environment, everything feels the effects of that much time passed, and this, of course, holds true for the members of Mazzy Star, Hope Sandoval and David Roback.

It would make sense that Mazzy Star would be a different band from the one we loved so long ago, but the new single, California, from their upcoming album, Seasons of Our Days, sounds as if no time has passed at all. The bare production, acoustic guitars, and Sandoval’s ethereal vocals create a pocket of quiet, contemplative, melancholic beauty that exists outside of the unrelenting flow of time. As soon as you hear those first few chords and aching lyrics you realize what you already knew, their sound is timeless, it is the past, it is the present, and it is the future, and it need never change.

Seasons of Your Days is due on September 24.

New Music // Keep Shelly In Athens – Recollection

18 Jul

Keep Shelly In Athens is an electronic duo from Athens, Greece, comprised of vocalist Sarah P and a mysterious producer known only as RΠЯ, and they’ve been producing sunkissed electropop since 2010, and are now on the verge of releasing their first LP, At Home, on September 17.

They’ve been slowly developing their unique style and building a devoted fanbase over the past couple years with the release of 2 excellent EP’s, In Love With Dusk in 2010 and Our Own Dream in 2011. Their music has a dreamlike quality, languid and hazy, like strolling through a small town you once lived in as a child, the sun in your eyes and the long forgotten memories, faded by the years gone past, washing over you in one euphoric wave after another.

Now they’re set to release their first full album and, while most of their earlier work is generally downtempo, their first single Recollection takes their signature dreamy sound and propels into an energetic summer jam that is perfect suited to driving fast on a sunny day with the windows down and the volume up.

New Music // Haerts – All The Days

13 Jul

Haerts are a new 5 piece from New York, including members Nini Fabi, Ben Gebert, Garrett Iener, Derek McWilliams, and Jonathan Schmidt, and they're currently touring with Washed Out in support of his upcoming new album, Paracosm. They've only release two songs so far but both releases have been spectacular, with their newest track All The Days being particularly stunning. Built around a slinky, almost predatory groove, lead singer Nini Fabi's vocals explode like fireworks in a stormy sky, culminating in that rare combination of music and voice that makes the hairs stand on end and sends shivers along the skin.

The music video deserves a nod as well, with its gorgeous cinematography and superb dancing it's easily one of the most beautiful, sophisticated, and perfectly matched videos to come out recently, proving that we shouldn't be so quick to forget the importance of the music video format.
